The History of Motorcycle Helmets:By Annabelle Manoukian
22/08/2007 by admin.

The first motorcycle was invented by Gottlieb Daimler in 1885. I am not sure what the maximum speed capacity of those first motorcycles was but today in our busy society the speed means a lot. Probably no one even imagined about motorcycle helmets back then with speed not being an issue and the roads not being filled with millions of motor vehicles. But the speed is an issue today and so are the motorcycle helmets.
The first motorcycle helmet was invented by Prof. Charles F. Lombard who developed a unique energy absorbing helmet for the United States Air Force. So, the first motorcycle helmet was not designed as a motorcycle helmet but it was rather designed for aviation. Dr. Lombard patented his unique invention which was applied not only to aviation but also automobile racing, motorcycles, hockey, etc…
As people started growing interest in riding motorcycles and passion for speeding, the fatal injuries also increased. And now some motorcycle helmet standards and mandatory laws were supposed to be put in place to help reduce the number of fatal injuries. In 1957 Snell Memorial Foundation was formed for the purpose of providing independent motorcycle helmet testing. In 1961 the world’s first mandatory motorcycle helmet law was passed on. And finally in 1974 US Department of Transportation (DOT) introduced Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards for motorcycle helmets. Those standards set by DOT made it mandatory for motorcycle helmet manufacturers to put a DOT approved sticker inside every helmet manufactured.
If you or a loved one own a motorcycle and do not have a motorcycle helmet please consider getting one. Sometimes a lot of the people who get into fatal injuries are not even guilty of speeding or reckless driving. They become victims of those other drivers who are speeding, driving recklessly or driving under the influence drugs or alcohol. In those cases wearing a motorcycle helmet makes the difference of life and death. Below you will find links to a great website where you can purchase a reliable, DOT approved motorcycle helmet at discounted price.
|
How valuable is someone’s life? Or what price can you put on your or a loved ones life? It is priceless. A hobby or an enjoyable interest such as riding a motorcycle should not become a fatal end. Consider purchasing a motorcycle helmet from http://www.helmetbuzz.com where you can find DOT approved brand-name motorcycle helmets for less than the retail price |

Motorcycle Riding Tips - Limited-Space Maneuvers: By Beau Wiley
22/08/2007 by admin.

With Spring fast approaching I thought it would be a good idea to start publishing a few motorcycle riding tips that you can practice once you dust off your bike and get it ready for Daytona Bike week or your first spring ride. One thing I hear from a lot of motorcyclists is that they have been riding for some many years and do not need to practice any riding skills. This is just an ignorant statement to make and often fueled by ego and pride. I have seen veteran riders of twenty years; do the stupidest things on a motorcycle. Sure they have been riding for twenty years, but have they truly ever learned to really ride correctly with skill and confidence. Sure some have the natural motor skills to perform well on a motorcycle but these refresher tips are there to make you more competent on your motorcycle while also boosting your ego since others will be impressed by your riding skills. Honest, you will be amazed how people notice a good competent rider.
This lesson will discuss Limited-space maneuvers. Now you may think, what? If I am going slow in a parking lot or driveway, why do I need to practice these types of motorcycle riding maneuvers? While not as dangerous as intersections or other road hazards, limited-space maneuvers, like parking areas, can be quite a challenge. Practice turning at low speeds, and do not forget to use the counterweight technique to help balance your motorcycle at slow speeds. This means to put more pressure on the outmost footrest, leaning the upper body outward opposite the turn. You can also move off the center of the seat, opposite from the turn, to improve balance and turning capability.
The best-trained motorcyclists are Police Motormen. These motorcycle cops are trained to maneuver large police motorcycles at slow speeds in tight situations. Police Motormen practice doing U-turns within two marked parking spaces. Sounds easy right? Well it is not. Go out and try it one day. I guarantee it will take you 4 spaces or more to do a U-turn. Odds are some of you may even drop your bike. The trick is to use your clutch friction zone and rear brake to get the motorcycle to maneuver and handle at very slow speeds. By slow speeds I mean under 5MPH. Walking pace. Police need to do this all the time and they have the best riding techniques. The other key is to look where you want the motorcycle to go. If you look down while performing a tight figure eight or a U-turn, I guarantee you will go where you are looking – down.
I initially practiced these techniques and was amazed at how difficult it was to turn your motorcycle around by performing a U-turn while trying to keep the turn within two parking spaces. It took me several hours over a few days to get the hang of it. Next I added in figure eights and slow crawl riding as if I were in a parade. As my skill improved with this technique and my rear brake and clutch were showing signs of wear, I become very confident that I could handle my motorcycle in tight situations.
The benefits of practicing this riding technique are that you become more skilled with handling your motorcycle. If you find you are on a narrow country road, you will have the confidence to know that you can safely and skillfully perform a U-turn in the limited space provided. While attending motorcycle events where parking is at a premium, this slow speed practice will help you maneuver threw the crowded parking lot without smashing into and pedestrians or parked motorcycles. Again, I found myself using this skill set a lot. Other motorcyclists noticed my skill. They were amazed that I could maneuver a large Victory Kingpin in the limited spaces. Even when carrying a passenger. So dust off your motorcycle and dust of your stale riding techniques and hit the nearest vacant parking lot for some much needed practice.
Here are some tips for parking safely:
- If parking in a parallel parking space next to a curb, position the motorcycle at an angle with the rear wheel to the curb.
- If using the side stand, turn the handlebars to the left for added stability; lock the forks for security.
- The feet on sides and center stands can sink into soft surfaces causing the motorcycle to fall. To prevent this, carry a flattened aluminum can or similar rigid object to put under the stand.
- Park the motorcycle in first gear for extra stability, particularly if on an incline.

Rolls-Royce Phantom Drophead Coupe Coming: By Levi Quinn
24/06/2007 by admin.
The car is still a bit of a snob, though. Looking at its photograph, you get the feeling that it actually knows it is a Rolls-Royce, because it requires you – or someone – to massage it regularly. In other words, it has a teakwood tonneau cover that requires an oil bath (linseed or Tung oil) to preserve its look at ever service stop.
The Phantom Drophead Coupe is a few inches – 10, to be precise – shorter than earlier Rolls-Royces, but it is still a big car - bigger than a Mercedes, sources say. Those same sources at Edmunds also say that the car handles well on the curvaceous roads of Italy, and that it handles speed really well.
Its 453-horsepower, V12 engine apparently shifts between gears so smoothly that it will be difficult to realize how fast you’re traveling. The car really likes to shift up. Apparently, this car loves going fast. In fact, the only criticism the test driver at Edmunds had was that the car is absolutely reluctant to downshift at all whatsoever.
The Phantom Drophead Coupe costs $410,000. It’s fairly pretty - or at least the designers and people who like Rolls-Royces think it’s pretty. The Coupe actually looks a bit chubby, with a large, snub nose and a humongous grille right between its little eyes, making it resembled a flat-faced Persian kitten.
The inside is full of soft leather, wood and chrome, most of the parts that increase the car’s worth to half a million dollars. The test drivers gave mega props to the stereo, which almost has the power to put the vocalist right into the car beside you. The stereo has an outrageous number of speakers.
The driving experience probably resembles the experience that you get when you’re in one of those adventure rides where it is actually the scenery around your car that’s moving around – not you. This car can create a special environment and insulate you from the world.
If you are a fan of the Rolls-Royce and you can afford the hefty price tag, then this may be a highly enjoyable car for you. There is definitely a sense of a completely new vehicle. And it is, after all, a convertible.

How to Get Cheap Car Insurance for Teens - Some Tips and Advice: By Elizabeth Newberry
14/06/2007 by admin.
You may be surprised to read that one of the main steps you can take to ensure your teen becomes a safe and experienced driver is to allow your teen to drive often. Think about it: if your teen does not get any driving practice, how is he supposed to become experienced? And without driving experience, how is your teen supposed to know how to handle certain driving situations?
You can not just hand your teen the keys when it is time to leave for college. You must help your teen become a safe and experienced driver before he leaves the nest. Below are some tips to get started.
Save yourself the effort. One way to help your teen become an experienced driver is to let him run your errands – even if it is just a quick trip to the grocery store. Wouldn’t you rather kick off your shoes before starting dinner than stand in line for bread and milk?
Take advantage of the weather. Do not refuse to let your teen drive if it is snowing or raining. The seasons won’t stop changing when you’re no longer around to shelter your teen, so you may as well prepare him for all driving conditions.
Go cruising. Let your teen take you for a Saturday spin once in a while. He will benefit from the relaxed driving atmosphere.
Watch your teen’s driving habits. Each time you and your teen are in the car together, pay close attention to your teen’s driving habits. Do not scrutinize or criticize your teen – that will only make him nervous. Praise the good moves, and correct the errors.

Motorhomes - Which One Fits Your Needs?: By Sam Butler
07/06/2007 by admin.
How many people will be traveling with you most trips? Will you be taking special equipment and supplies to use at your destination? (i.e. Bikes, ski equipment, scuba gear, fishing outfits, etc.) How many days/weeks per year do you expect to be traveling in your motor home? Once you have a picture of what you need, you can begin to weed out the options. Once you have your basic model, you can pick and choose from among the motor homes the model with the options and features that will make traveling even more fun.
There are three basic classes of motor homes. Class A, the largest, resembles a charter bus. These motor homes offer the most space and most standard features. These motor homes can also be customized with a wide variety of luxuries that may be beyond what you are looking for as a new user. But if you have a large family traveling with you, or you will be on the road for more than a week at a time, class A motor homes are a good buy.
Class C motor homes are the camper style vehicles with the bunk over the cab design. These can pack many of the features of the class A but are significantly shorter (and cheaper.) The shorter body is due to the main sleeping quarters being placed in the normally wasted space over the driver’s head. Good for a large family on a budget.
If you will be traveling alone or just in a party of two, the class B motor home may be the one for you. Built inside the framework of a standard street van, these are the smallest of the motor homes. But properly configured, they can still provide all of the basic needs for a much smaller price. Also consider if you are going to use your motor home for towing and order the suspension and engine package accordingly. Remember, not too much vehicle, especially at first. Just scale your motor home to be in line with your needs, and you will do OK.
Now that you have an idea of what to look for, it’s time to match it up with a real make and model. Motor home dealers are helpful for this. They will often have an extensive lineup of motor homes for your inspection. RV and Motor home shows are also useful for reference. Private sales are also plentiful. Check out the magazines dedicated to these types of sales. However you find one, motor homes are a great way to travel.

MP3 Car Stereos:by Jason Gluckman
14/05/2007 by admin.
 MP3 car stereos play audio CDs, CD-R/RW discs and MP3 files. MP3 car stereos can play long hours of digital music. The key features of these stereos include programmable track memory, digital anti-skip memory, and professional digital stereo headphones. These players allow you to skip, search, play, pause, and repeat. MP3 car stereos are provided with AM/FM tuners that can store a number of FM and AM stations.
The leader of in-car MP3 technology is Kenwood, so a product from this company is a safe buy. Kenwood’s KRC-M4524 is a very cost-effective entry-level MP3 player. Blaupunkt and Sony are other well known manufacturers of quality MP3 car stereos. Other brands to choose from are Pioneer, JVC, Alpine, Panasonic, Philips and Sanyo.
MP3 car stereos have high quality audio and require very little space for installation. Today, MP3 car stereos have SD, USB and iPod connections to provide better services.
When buying an MP3 car stereo, there are a few points to bear in mind. The first and foremost feature one should look for is the power of the stereo. Another standard feature is a detachable front panel, which ensures the security of your stereo. Other important elements are the cost and brand. An MP3 car stereo with a high-level output and a fader is ideal. A stereo with a high-level output will allow you to adjust the relative volume of the front and rear speakers. MP3 car stereos with four channels can drive four speakers.
MP3 car stereo prices range from 50 pounds to 300 pounds

Car Insurance: Company Comparison for the UK: By Sara Sentor
27/04/2007 by admin.
 According to the Independent newspaper, UK households are spending an average of £1000 annually for car and home insurance. Despite the rising cost of car insurance, many insurance buyers are not researching the market thoroughly. If they do so they will be able to get a bargain auto insurance.
There could be many reasons for not researching the insurance market. It could be less time, lack of information, not asking the right queries and many people simply don’t bother.
- Comparison of 3 popular Car Insurance Companies:
Norwich Union, More Than, Tesco Personal Finance.
More Than: Car Insurance
A financial brand of Royal Sun Alliance Insurance Group, More Than was launched in 2001. Its services include not only car insurance but also insurance in home, pet, travel and life.
Tesco Personal Finance: Car Insurance
Tesco Personal Finance provides services in finance and insurance. Insurance product range includes car, health, home, pet and life.
Norwich Union: Car Insurance
It is a subsidiary of AVIVA, worlds fifth largest and UK’s biggest insurance groups. Norwich Union’s insurance activities are monitored by Financial Services Authority.
Features of these Car Insurance Companies
- Online Discount Offers: Of the three car insurance firms, More Than offers maximum online discount of 15%. Both Norwich Union and Tesco Personal Finance offer 10% online discount.
- Breakdown Cover: More Than: 50% off breakdown is added to car insurance quote, specifically for prospective customers. Norwich Union: Does not offer a flat rate for breakdown cover. It is calculated based on the insured’s situation and £5 off is given for online breakdown cover.
- No Claims Bonus
More Than- Offers maximum no claims bonus for the life of your car insurance policy. This is offered to drivers with a good record, as a part of fully comprehensive car insurance policy. Driving conviction will make you ineligible for it.
- No Frills policy No Frills policy is offered by Norwich Union and Tesco personal finance. This does away with replacement car and personal injury cover and consequently reduces the cost of premium considerably.
- Pay as you go Pay as you go is the latest technology installed by Norwich Union and More Than in order to track down motorists’ usage. An optional offer, this will help car owners to cut down on their insurance cost.
More Than- Targets young drivers between the ages of 17-25 and offers a bonus at the end of the year if they don’t drive between the 11pm and 6 am.
Norwich Union- If motorists keep their car in the garage for six months, they will be charged less premium.
- Pay your premium in one go If you do not wish to pay a monthly premium, then Norwich Union gives you the option of paying your premium in one go.
All these offers are subject to availability so do check before hand with the company, when purchasing a car insurance policy.

Car Care and Protection By Janet Smith
18/03/2007 by admin.
 When you get a new car, you’re protective and careful to keep it looking and performing great. As time passes most of us get a little less interested. Taking the time to protect and keep your car looking great not only helps the look, it can also help to maintain the value of your vehicle. For instance, roll up car care covers, which can be custom fit to protect your car anywhere while sitting outdoors. These covers can protect your vehicle from outdoor elements, dirt, pollen, and other items that hamper the looks of your car. Another great alternative to parking your vehicle in a garage is to use a parking shelter or canopy.
Importance of Car Care and Maintenance
Car care and maintenance isn’t always convenient but they are necessary components if you want to keep your nice vehicle running. Here are some ideas to make car care less of a hassle: As far as maintenance, keeping up with regular scheduled oil changes, tire rotations, inspections or other special maintenance your vehicle may need can keep you from having many issues later on.
Any time you hear a weird noise, feel vibrating that is unusual or see a warning light that shouldn’t be on, the quicker you can get your vehicle to a garage the better chances you have to keep something serious from happening. Continuing to drive longer than necessary in these situations can create big and expensive problems.
Cleaning and Car Care Accessories
Clean your car in a snap without paying the price of a detailing shop. It’s easy with the right car care accessories to lighten the load. Foam and spray nozzles like we all used to use at the quick car washes are now available to attach right to your own water hose, making it simple to have soap and rinse options all in one nozzle. Also new at many of your specialty retail stores are the automotive detailing kits that have everything in them to make your car sparkle.
For inside car care, the wet/dry cordless vacuum is a must have item. Not only will you be able to clean up dry messes but also liquid spills as well. If your vehicle includes vinyl or leather, don’t forget to use specific car care cleaners on these delicate items especially if they are often in the sun.
