Mother’s Day by John Foster

mother’s dayMother’s day (March 2nd) is next in line for this year’s celebration.  and makes me remember my mother and her life in which she gave so much to her family and friends, and touched the hearts of all she met, you see it’s not about being rich in life but having richness in your life.

And sharing the goodness within you that makes you special, and my mother had this in abundance, as I suspect do so many other mothers out there that will be descended upon by the children to say thanks for being there when they need her.

So how do we show our appreciation - Well in modern times the Card plays a big part, but this year do something special and make your own.

It’s not so hard as most people will know someone with a printer  all you have to do is make it personal to your mother, try a 3 d card this involves sticking layers of card onto the front and building it up in layers. Flowers are good for this, I even used real ones but im sure you can come up with designs relevant to your mother.

Then of course the biggest time for the flower and plant industries and over the years you can now get a really nice display for less than ten pounds.

So go on do your best to say that special thank you because let me tell you, you only have one mother. and when they are gone they are gone but, you can still show your appreciation, for me I just close my eyes on mothers day and remember all the family get together and how mum and dad was the centre of our lives so happy together just having the children around them was enough to make them happy.

I have a little cry and then I am thankful for receiving that goodness from both mum and dad that made me the person I am today.

God bless Mums and Dads all over the world.

Gardening Basics: Do You Know Your Garden Zone?: By Glenn Cutforth

   When starting out as a gardener, there are many many things you don’t as yet know. In fact, quite often you might not even realize what you don’t know, which means they may not be a problem at the beginning. However, as your experience grows and you become anxious to try out new garden styles, various flowers, plants or shrubs, you’ll realize you’re going to have to start learning some gardening basics.

For instance, it’s important to know in which garden zone you live in. In the United States — and most parts of the world — there are garden zones assigned, which makes it a somewhat easier to understand which types of flowers, plants, trees and shrubs grow well in your zone. These zones are separated based on how much heat an area gets, and when the first and last frost of each year take place.

Other factors contribute to the success or failure of growing flowers and other plants, however, including how much natural rain falls, the length of sunlight throughout the day, as well as the types of soils found in the area.

Due to these other factors, garden zones are just a baseline to get you started, but you may discover that some plants you’ve tried to grow may not always act the way you expect them to in your gardening zone. This is due to the differences within the same zone, and will depend on where you live. Each zone stretches across the country from the east to west coasts, with the lower zones being farther north, and the higher zones being south.

The same zone on the east coast is likely going to be slightly different than the desert southwest mainly because of differences in sun strength and the level of humidity. In addition, there can also be substantial differences in the types of soil naturally present in each area. Thus, while all plants are marked for which zones they’ll grow in and how much sun they require, the same plant may perform quite differently in different parts of the country even if it’s the same zone.

Here’s a good general rule: if you can buy a plant or flower at your local garden center, it’s likely to grow with relative success in your area.

It may be best to try and start with small seedling plants and then experiment with them in different locations. You may discover that the your first year planting pansies, for instance, they’ll die quickly because they didn’t appear to like the full sun location where they were planted. The following year, if you try another spot with less strong sunlight for so many hours of the day, they could thrive and grow much better.

Meanwhile, you may discover that Vincas grow and thrive in the hottest places in your yard, no matter how many hours the sun beats down on them.

If you’re interested in finding out which gardening zone you live in, check around on the Internet, or ask at your local garden center or nursery. If you live at the edge of two zones, the good news is that you’ll have many more plant varieties to experiment with in your garden because often you’ll do well with plants that can grow well in both zones.

Styles of Bonsai Gardens: By Chris Wight

     It is very important to realize when you are considering a bonsai garden exactly what style garden you want. Not all gardens are created equal, and some are easier to maintain than others are. This means that if you are a bonsai gardening novice you would be best suited towards a simpler style of garden to begin with instead of tackling the most advanced forms. Once you have mastered the basics you can certainly feel free to jump into the advanced forms of gardening and you will have the knowledge and confidence you need in order to have a beautiful garden.

While the professionals at Bonsai Boy can help, you select the right plants that will match the style garden you select. The first style is the Chokkan; this style is considered the best for beginners because it is one of the easiest and simplest to learn. The trees in this style are typically upright and straight. If you are looking for a tree for this style look for something with a straight trunk and a balanced branch structure. Typically, the plants from this style are planted in rectangular shaped pots, which accent the shape.

Next is the Moyogi, this form is a bit more advanced style. The top of the trunk leans forward slightly instead of growing straight up. Young plants tend to be much easier to locate in this form because they are more flexible. This style also looks great in an oval or even rectangular planter that helps to accentuate the style of the plant.

Shakkan is next with a trunk that slants more than the Chokkan or Moyogi styles. This tends to be considered an intermediate style of bonsai garden and the plants are typically planted in round or square planters so that the tree bends out over the planter.

Kengais the next, it is one of the more advanced styles available. This style tends to be very difficult because of the sloping style of the plant that is required. For this style to be best used it is helpful if a round or hexagonal planter is used that is higher than it is wide to help the plant cascade in the proper direction better.

Han-kengai is next. This requires the trunk to grow straight before cascading downward on a slight angle. The angle is very slight and not dramatic at all compared to many of the other styles. The shape of the pot is usually a round or hexagonal pot same as with cascading plants, however they planter does not need to be as high in order to achieve the same effect.

Funkinagashi is a style that simulates extreme exposures. The branches tend to be empty and blank which represents the loss of greenery when extreme weather conditions occur. Lastly is the Bunjingi style, this style has several shapes but is often called the strangest form of bonsai gardening. The shapes are typically unnatural and strange, which is meant to symbolize trees surviving in nature under awful conditions.

Chris Wight has been developing a green thumb for years and has recently fallen in love with the art of Bonsai. To learn more about Bonsai Gardening, please visit his site:

Tips On Sharpening The Lawn Mower Blade: By Darren Lintern

   A rotary-blade lawn mower is designed to cut grass by slicing it off at great speeds. The blades will rotate on many mowers at approximately 3,000 revolutions per minute. But at this great speed the blades become ineffective if chipped or dented. However, keeping the lawn mower blade sharp is often a straightforward task that only takes a few minutes with the appropriate tools and techniques.

As the job will require the mower to be turned over to remove the blade, for safety reasons it would be worthwhile to drain the gas depending on the model. It is possible to tilt some models without leakage, although others can’t. In any case, at least remove the spark plug for the duration of the task. This is predominantly necessary for those models that have an auto-starter attached. There is a very small chance that the mower could start accidentally, but make that zero chance anyway.

Turn the mower deck over and lodge a piece of wood between the under-deck and the blade to prevent the blade from twisting. Wear suitable protection on your hands, such as leather gloves, and use the right sized or an adjustable wrench for your lawn mower.

Take out the blade and wipe off any dirt residue and grass. At the same time, use a scraper or putty knife to remove any built up grass from the under-deck section as well. Now clamp the mowers blade into a vice bench for manual sharpening. Inspect the blade for cracks. The size of any chips present, will determine if you need to use a medium to fine metal file or in some cases a larger course file.

Lightly oil the lawn mower blade with fine machine oil. Now take metal file in both hands and shove it across the bevelled edge from the centre to the edge in a smooth motion. Aim to keep the file at an identical angle as the bevel as much as possible.

Be cautious not to file the flat edge, unless it’s essential to level off a chip that has pushed metal out, making it uneven at that location.

With equal pressure make the same amount of strokes on both sides of the blade. The intention here is to maintain the blades balance, having an identical amount of metal on either side of the nut hole. If the blades are out of balance, this will cause extreme vibration to the mower.

The ultimate device to sharpen a lawn mowers blade is an electric bench grinder, but if used inappropriately they have the potential to wipe out the blade very quickly. It’s vital to clamp the blades at precisely the right angle. Most grinders will make this easy, by using attached clamps.

If you are carrying out this task free hand, be certain that you have an extremely steady hand. Or else, you may end up grinding too much off the blade in a single stroke. That could either wreck the blade, or at the very least make if off balance. By understanding the proper technique and using the appropriate clamps you can have this job completed in minutes. Always wear eye protection, of course. Flying fragments of metal can devastate eyesight for life.

As it can take only a few moments to re-sharpen, the effort is worthwhile, as you’ll save a visit to the store. On occasions, though, it can be simpler to replace the lawn mower blade if the damage is too significant.

The Amazing Health Benefits of Tomatoes By Russell Cantwell

    Health Benefits of Tomatoes

Many of the health benefits of tomatoes are believed to be associated with the natural chemical that makes it red.

Lycopene in tomatoes causes the bright red color. Whether a person can get as much benefit from a lycopene supplement as he or she can from eating a whole tomato is a subject of some debate.

The name lycopene was taken from the botanical name of the tomato, Solanum lycopersicum. Lycopene is the most common organic pigment in the human body. It is also one of the most potent antioxidants.

Antioxidants are necessary in both humans and plants to prevent damage to the cells that can be caused by oxidative stress, which is present in many diseases including heart disease, vascular disease, Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s and cancer.

The amount of lycopene in tomatoes is higher than that found in other red fruits and vegetables. In most fruits and vegetables, the nutritional content is reduced by cooking. However, the amount of lycopene in tomatoes that is available for use by the human body (bioavailable) is increased by cooking.

Thus, the bioavailable lycopene in tomato paste is four times greater than the bioavailable lycopene in tomatoes that are freshly picked.

Research studies related to the health benefits of tomatoes are numerous. The lycopene in tomatoes is believed to play a role in cancer prevention. However, recent studies have shown that a stand-alone lycopene supplement alone is not as effective as dietary intake of a wide variety of fruits and vegetables.

Public health organizations, the American Heart Association and the American Cancer Society recommend a daily intake of 5-10 servings of fruits and vegetables per day.

Recently, at the University of Illinois, vegetables were studied for their effectiveness at reducing cancer tumor growth. In this study, tomatoes were compared to broccoli and a broccoli-tomato combination. The researchers concluded that the broccoli-tomato combination was more effective at suppressing tumor growth than either of the vegetables alone.

It seems that the health benefits of tomatoes are enhanced by adding other vegetables to the mix, creating a synergy.

An alternative to a lycopene supplement, and probably a better choice for dietary supplementation, is a whole food supplement.

Recent research showed that a whole food supplement containing fruit reduced unhealthy cholesterol levels in male volunteers. However, research involving a lycopene supplement alone was not shown to improve cholesterol levels.

Scientists have spent many years trying to isolate the “effective” ingredients in plant foods, but most now agree that it is likely that a combination of plant food components provide the benefits.

Whole food supplements made from plant foods contain all of the naturally existing components, not just one or two isolated compounds.

The health benefits of tomatoes have been overshadowed lately by a fear of salmonella contamination. Salmonella is a bacterium that causes typhoid fever, paratyphoid fever and food poisoning. At one time, salmonella diseases were easily treated with antibiotics.

However, a new strain of salmonella, caused by the overuse of antibiotics in poultry and beef, may be resistant to antibiotic treatment.

You can get the health benefits of tomatoes and avoid the risk of salmonella poisoning with whole food supplements, like the popular Juice Plus+®.

Professional Pond Kits Provide Comprehensive Solution For Water Garden Projects By Gerry Fung

   Two essential components of a professional water garden include a skimmer and a high-end waterfall filter. A pond skimmer helps to keep debris, such as leaves and twigs, off the surface of the pond. This is extremely important because decaying leaves not only create toxic by-products, but also encourage the growth of algae. This is because decay increases the nutritional value of the water in the pond, which provides a rich source of nutrition to algae.

Proper filtration is the other essential requirement for any pond. A proper pond filter should include both mechanical and biological filtration to remove large particles and encourage the growth of beneficial bacteria. Beneficial bacteria helps to convert fish waste into harmless fertilizer, which can be consumed by your pond plants. The existence of a proper biological filter will help to encourage the growth of this bacteria, which is essential if you wish to raise any fish or aquatic life in your pond.

There are several pond kits that fulfill these requirements. For example, MicroPond kits include a pump, liner, underlay, filtration media, and both a skimmer and bio waterfall filter. These kits come complete with all the required accessories in order to transform your backyard into a spectacular work of art. The kit’s skimmer Trap Basket has a large filter that is easily removable for cleaning and maintenance. There is also a secondary filter mat used for secondary filtration prior to reaching the pump.

The kit’s Bio Waterfall Filter not only helps you to create a waterfall, but it also includes both removable biological and mechanical filters, and 2 activated charcoal pouches. The charcoal filtration units have an extremely high surface area and when placed in the water bind, and thus remove harmful chemicals such as bacterial toxins. Poisonous toxic molecules physically adhere to the activated charcoal and stick to it until they are completely destroyed.

Before you start planning your garden pond, make sure you have all the necessary materials. The most affordable way to ensure this is to check online for professional pond kits that meet your requirements. Pond kits usually provide most or all of the basic materials required to install a pond, at a discounted price. Purchasing a pond kit also reduces the risk of mistakes that are often associated with purchasing the incorrectly-sized equipment. Have you ever tried to return liner, after it’s been cut up? Or a pump, after you have run water through it? Good luck convincing a retail outlet that it came like that!

Good luck with your garden pond , and be sure to check out the MicroPond kit! Go to GardenSM.com for great deals on pond kits.

Enticing Butterflies To Your Garden : By Mary Hanna

   Enticing butterflies to your garden is fun and simple too. Butterflies are easy to attract to your garden if you plant a garden where the caterpillar (pupa step) has plants to eat and then the butterfly has flowers from which to sip nectar. Butterfly gardens are simple to plant and will provide you and your friends and family a chance to peek butterflies in their natural environment.

The basics are an open space with tons of sunshine and a location that is not windy. Choose a spot with lots of sunlight with a few rocks or stones that can warm up on which the butterflies will bask in the afternoon sun. Strive to locate your garden close to hedges or shrubs that will aid in shielding them from the hardy winds. If it is too windy, the butterflies won’t stay around for any length of time. The hedge or shrub needs to develop food for the caterpillar. You can find out what the caterpillar likes best from your Nursery Garden Center.

Butterflies relish mud puddles where they can drink the water and soak up minerals. A patch of moist soil will make them joyful. Most urgent of all is that the garden be pesticide free. Some gardeners like to utilize pesticides to chase away unwanted pests, unfortunately it will keep the butterflies from visiting your garden too. Plant your butterfly garden in a cranny where it will be free of chemical pesticides. Worthier still, ask your Garden Headquarters about organic gardening.

Flowers with nectar are a need for a butterfly garden. When planting these nectar sources try to put in plants that will provide nectar throughout the growing season since these are the origin of subsistence for the butterflies. Don’t discount shrubs and wildflowers. Roses, geraniums and lilies have no nectar so plant them somewhere else. Have your garden assorted to allure a the greater quantity of butterflies. Another ingredient for the butterfly garden is a source for larva food. The caterpillar needs food to develop into a butterfly. If there is no food present they will die. Plant some herbs for both of you. They love parsley, dill, and fennel for their meal. What herbs they don’t eat you can collect for home cooking with fresh herbs.

A butterfly garden can also be planted in containers. Purchase some elegant pots and plant them with flowers that retain a magnificent bouquet as well as vivid pretty colors (available at your Garden Center). Petunias, daylilies or sweet alyssum will do the trick. Of course the butterfly bushes are a given, or plant some hanging baskets with Impatients (shade will be necessary).

Some gardeners like to fashion there own feeder and solution. And it is easy to do. Put 4 parts water to 1 part sugar in a pot, bring it to a boil and cook it until the sugar dissolves. Bring it to room tempetature. Use a container that is somewhat shallow, drench a paper towel with the solution and position it in the garden receptacle. Deposit a stone in the garden container so the butterflies have a seat to rest on while they are feeding.

This would be a great project for the kids. Have them maintain a diary of each of the various species that stop by your butterfly garden. Let them look up the butterflies on the computer to understand all about each special butterfly and it becomes not only enjoyable, but a learning experience besides.

Because there are so many growing zones in the United KIngdom you will want to speak with your Nursery Headquarters for suggestions of what plants to utilize for attracting butterflies in your individual zone.

There is an ancient American Indian Fable about butterflies: “To have a dream come true you must seize a butterfly. Whisper to the butterfly what your request is and then set it free. This tiny messenger will carry your wish to the Great Spirit in the sky and it will become true. ” What a great folktale.

Happy Gardening!

Garden Insects - Not All Are Pests

  There are gardeners who think that every insect they see is a pest and needs to be destroyed as quickly as possible, when in reality there are some insects that actually help your garden. They catch and eat any number of their harmful cousins. To know which ones are beneficial will help you decide which insects to eliminate and which ones to welcome.

It is important to realize that there will always be some harmful insects in your garden, the key is to keep them under control. Three insects that can help you to do this are praying mantis, ladybugs and lacewings. They are ferocious hunters and most beneficial to have around.

Lacewing larvae can eat up to 60 aphids in an hour. They also eat whiteflies, mites, the eggs of caterpillars and a variety of other small pests.

Ladybugs and their larvae consume up to 40 aphids per hour. They also devour spider mites, beetle grubs, whiteflies and other soft bodied insects.

Praying mantis are fierce predators that will eat a wide variety of pests.

Apart from these three, there are other beneficial insects which are common and can help destroy garden pests.

A variety of predator mites feed on harmful spider mites and thrips without harming plants themselves.

Parasitic nematodes are microscopic worms in the soil that eat their way into numerous soil dwelling pests including grubs, sod webworms, carpenter worms, weevils and destroy them.

Different kinds of wasps are very effective when it comes to insect control. The Trichogramma wasps deposit their larvae into the eggs of caterpillars, from where they eat their way out, destroying the eggs. The Aphytis melinus, another tiny parasitic wasp attacks and kills red scale and Metaphycus helvolus attacks black scale.

Several species of small wasps attack whiteflies in their immature stages. Many other tiny wasps help to control flies when they lay their eggs in the pupae of several types of them, including houseflies.

Most of these beneficial insects can be bought from nurseries and garden supply stores for a few dollars. It is best to release them in the evening because daylight encourages flight. Be aware that without access to prey, water and shelter they will fly away. It is necessary to provide the right environment by growing many kinds of plants in your garden. In return these ‘good’ insects will help your garden to stay healthy and reduce the need to use chemical pesticides.
